Abstract:
The increasing digitization of the fashion industry is transforming garment development, introducing new tools and workflows related to Digital Product Creation (DPC). Industry reports and European regulations highlight the growing demand for digital and sustainability-related competencies in fashion product development and prototyping. However, fashion design education still faces significant challenges in integrating digital technologies with the traditional knowledge required for garment construction. Pattern making, historically based on tacit, craft-based, and experience-driven knowledge, remains fundamental for understanding the relationship with the body, garment structure, fit, and transformation.
At the same time, the growing importance of digital tools requires new technical and methodological skills together with a solid understanding of traditional pattern making. This knowledge is essential to critically interpret digital tools and strategically apply them in relation to specific design objectives. Moreover, early design decisions related to pattern making influence fabric utilization, seam construction, assembly complexity, and therefore material consumption, production time, and energy use. Pattern-making strategies also affect the garment’s potential for disassembly and recycling, making this phase crucial for integrating more sustainable design approaches.
Another critical issue concerns the misalignment between the digital tools introduced in educational contexts and the heterogeneous technological ecosystem used in professional environments. The fashion industry relies on a wide range of CAD systems and digital platforms for pattern making, prototyping, and product development. Rather than training students on numerous specific tools, an important educational challenge is enabling them to understand the underlying logics of digital product development so they can adapt to different technologies in professional contexts.
This paper investigates the pedagogical challenges of teaching pattern making and garment prototyping in contemporary fashion design education. The research combines a literature review on pattern-making pedagogy, tacit knowledge in design practices, digital transformation in fashion education, and sustainability, with a documentary analysis of curricula from selected international fashion schools.
The analysis examines how current educational programs address traditional pattern making, digital pattern design (2D CAD and 3D prototyping), and sustainability within the garment development process. Through a comparative analysis of curricula and literature, the study identifies educational gaps in the integration of analog, digital, and methodological competencies in fashion design training. Based on these findings, the paper proposes pedagogical guidelines that integrates traditional craft knowledge with digital product development practices and sustainability principles, emphasizing experiential learning approaches and the role of digital prototyping in supporting more sustainable garment development.
By addressing the relationship between tacit knowledge, digital technologies, and professional skills, this research contributes to the debate on fashion design education and offers guidelines for preparing future professionals for hybrid and increasingly digital fashion production environments.Keywords:
