Abstract:
When teaching English, the main goal is to make students produce the language, therefore, there is a need to work with the communicative approach to enhance natural communication in the classroom. In the degree of English Language in Universidad Autónoma del Carmen a study based on the productive skill of writing was carried out since it was observed students’ communicative deficiencies to transmit written messages. The objective of this research is to evaluate if participants can achieve writing competencies through compulsory writing tasks in formal instruction, therefore, the subjects were students enrolled in the fifth semester of the aforementioned degree. For data gathering, we considered a diagnostic test, an essay, and a research project. The methodology used was a quantitative and non-experimental study, moreover, the research design was transversal and correlational-causal. Among the main findings are students' lack of writing correctness, ideas organization, and proper message transmission. The outcome was analyzed in four aspects; words, sentences, paragraphs, and texts, concluding these students have an impoverished development in written communication due to the neglecting of writing elements and language constraints.
