Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to evaluate the knowledge transference from teacher to student in real time, in order to analyze the causes of the high rate of failing grades in the subject "Mechanics for Engineers" that is part to the first course of the Civil Engineering Degree, in the University of Alicante. This is a common subject for many engineering degrees, and it deals with very basic concepts that are studied and used all over the world for the majority of engineers. Unfortunately, the high rate of failing grades is also common in the majority of engineering degrees that include this subject in its curriculum. Therefore, any research in order to improve student success in this subject would be helpful for many universities. In order to make the knowledge transfer evaluation some test have been designed using a web tool. The students can solve the test on his phone mobile immediately after the class. This task involves not more than five minutes. We were very careful with this due to the lack of time that usually the teacher has to deal with the amount of contents into this subject. In order to make the activity attractive and also useful for the students, test questions are designed in order to be a help for the assimilation of the newly acquired knowledge. The answers are stored in real time so that the teacher has them immediately and, in case of detecting deficiencies in the understanding of a particular concept, it is possible to reinforce that concept in the next session with the students, so as to avoid that the student is lost already during the first classes. The test results, together with the general exam results allow to evaluate the goodness of the tool to measure the knowledge transference from teacher to student in real time. The experience, results and conclusions for a particular group of students is described in this paper.
