CREATION OF A RADIO CHANNEL TO WORK ON BASIC SKILLS IN AN ADULT EDUCATION CENTRE

Abstract:
Service learning (ApS) is an educational approach that combines academic study with delivering a real service to the community. This approach enables students to learn through practical experience, meaning they apply the knowledge gained in their coursework to projects that address authentic social needs. Additionally, once the experience concludes, students reflect on what they have learned by engaging in self-criticism and evaluating the service they provided. Similarly, teachers identify strengths and weaknesses for future improvement. These kinds of experiences are vital in the 21st century, as they help develop key skills and train active citizens who are committed to their environment. They also motivate students (which is particularly beneficial when working with adults) and encourage the inclusion and participation of all students involved.

This paper presents an ApS proposal developed by professors of the Polytechnic University of Madrid at an Adult Education Centre (CEPA). The proposal involved creating a radio channel to address the basic skills included in the The Compulsory Secondary Education curriculum, where university students trained CEPA students in sustainability. This experience was conducted over six months, during which teachers and students collaborated on a project to promote energy efficiency in the Salamanca neighbourhood (Madrid, Spain).

The results from this proposal were very positive and enabled students to develop both digital skills and abilities related to oral and written communication. Key concepts of energy efficiency included in the Technology syllabus were also addressed, and teamwork and student autonomy were promoted. Additionally, the university students involved carried out social awareness activities with the CEPA students, helping them to reinforce the key content learned in the building maintenance and monitoring subjects. Overall, this research offers a genuine educational experience that has been successfully implemented and can be adapted to other educational settings. Therefore, both the timing and methods outlined here can be modified by university and non-university teachers interested in applying ApS experiences.
