Abstract:
Sleep quality is a key determinant of overall well-being, exerting substantial influence on both physical and psychological health. Higher sleep quality is consistently linked to enhanced psychological functioning, including increased positive affect and lower levels of depressive symptoms, even when accounting for variables such as physical health status and stress. Conversely, inadequate sleep quality serves as a predictor of adverse physical and mental health outcomes and is associated with diminished functional capacity, including reduced activity levels and productivity. Furthermore, sleep quality demonstrates a significant association with occupational well-being, with occupational self-efficacy identified as a partial mediator of this relationship.
Given its wide-ranging impact on psychological, physical, and occupational domains, sleep quality represents an essential component of overall well-being.
The aim of the study was to evaluate sleep quality among educators and to examine its relationship with quality of life.

Methods:
The sample consisted of 303 sports educators (51% women, 49% men). The study employed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment (WHOQOL), both of which are well-established and validated instruments adapted for use in Latvian. Data collection was conducted anonymously and in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Human Rights. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were applied. This research was funded by the framework of the project "The impact of innovative integrated recreational physical activity intervention on the cognitive abilities, sleep quality and self-efficacy of sport educators" (RSU/LSPA-PA-2024/1-0009) that is financed by the investment of the European Union Recovery and Resilience Facility and the state budget within the framework of the project “RSU internal and RSU with LASE external consolidation” No. 5.2.1.1.i.0/2/24/I/CFLA/055.

Results:
Significant associations were identified between overall sleep quality and multiple dimensions of quality of life among sports educators, including physical health (r = 0.495, p < 0.01), mental health (r = 0.342, p < 0.01), social relationships (r = 0.177, p < 0.01), and environmental well-being (r = 0.235, p < 0.01).

Conclusions:
These findings highlight the substantial role of sleep quality in shaping the well-being of sports educators and underscore the importance of promoting healthy sleep practices to support their physical, psychological, and social functioning.
