Abstract:
The main objective of this study is to improve the teaching-learning process and safety in practical activities in the Integrated Laboratory of Processes and Products in the Pilot Plant in the Chemical Engineering Degree in the Faculty of Chemical Sciences and Technologies, developing audiovisual material. The aim of this study is to address, from a global context, the promotion of autonomy and self-learning on the part of the student in order to acquire the competences related to the laboratory practices in the Pilot Plant. This study has a working team formed by the teaching staff teaching the subjects of study and this methodology is developed on experience of these group. In previous years, the students were provided with practice scripts to carry out the practical exercises, but they waited for the teacher's explanation to understand experimental procedure. The aim is not to replace the teacher's explanations, but to ensure that the student is better prepared.
These audiovisual resources have been developed in subject of the Degree in Chemical Engineering as a means of transversal coordination and represent a new teaching methodology in accordance with the EHEA (European Higher Education Area), with the implementation of innovative resources and materials that allow the improvement and renewal of the teaching-learning processes. The audiovisual material consists of short videos of approximately 5 minutes. In these videos, the teacher shows the experimental procedure with special emphasis on the operation of the installation and the safety measures to be taken in the event of an emergency. The audiovisual tools and resources have been presented through a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), specifically the Moodle platform, where the security rules and practice scripts are also available, and their development contribute to improving the digital competences of the degree's teaching staff.
The lecturers present questionnaires made available to them, by means of which it is possible to determine whether the students have worked on the material presented and their knowledge of its contents, as well as, the safety standards of the different equipment, prior to carrying out the laboratory practicals. The results obtained from these questionnaires form part of the evaluation of the different subjects. Finally, students and teachers carry out satisfaction surveys checking the improvement of the proposal introduced. It should be noted that this methodology is clearly innovative in that it promotes the preparation of theoretical-practical content with tools and resources that place the student as the main actor in its development.
In addition to working on several of the priority lines of work of the EHEA, thus demonstrating its coherence and consistency with the proposals of the EHEA and its adaptation to the objectives. This type of procedure has motivated students and accelerates the educational process, improving their performance and satisfaction.
