Abstract:
The virtually universal decision to suspend face-to-face meetings, including lectures, in March 2020, took most teachers by surprise - even those who, like the authors of this text, had been regularly producing educational materials in digital formats for their courses. Our previous course materials consisted mostly of PowerPoint presentations and interactive notebooks (developed with Wolfram Mathematica) that were shared with students using using Moodle and a personal Dropbox account; the methodology followed to develop and use them in class has already been discussed elsewhere. We now describe the creation of a website to share updated versions of the educational materials previously developed, which allow us to successfully surf the waves generated in the educational landscape by the pandemic. The first step was to record the PowerPoint presentations, in an .MP4 format, with the voice-overs of the teachers. The next step was to stop using Moodle, as an LMS, to start using Google Classroom (since August 2020). The main reason for this was that the Google suite was adopted by the authors' institution; this allows us to have e-mail accounts with the additional benefit of using the Google suite with, among other services, space in the cloud (Drive) and a YouTube Channel. The videos from the PowerPoint presentations were uploaded to the Youtube channel and the links to them were shared with the students through Google Classroom. To organize and distribute not only the videos but also adapted versions of the interactive notebooks and quizzes, a website was built using WordPress The site, which will be launched in the next semester (August 2023) is organized following the course’s structure and consists of 5 units. The interactive notebooks and the quizzes can be downloaded directly from the site, while the videos redirect to the YouTube channel associated with the teacher’s g-mail account. The main advantage of this transition is to make the materials available to a greater number of potential users. In another work the UNAM’s University Learning Network (RUA) was described . The RUA is an URLs repository of sites with educational contents linked to careers syllabus. Migrating the materials onto the site allow us to index them through RUA and therefore making easy for any user to find them.
