Abstract:
Tablet technology is a wireless computer (PC) technology that allows users to navigate and operate the software installed on the tablet through touch screen technology. This technology has become very popular since its introduction in 2009 and is increasingly being utilized in different applications. The education sector world-wide is also starting to adopt this technology to facilitate the learning and teaching processes and improve the effectiveness of learning as well as teaching.

This research paper identifies the unique characteristics of this new technology, and investigates the benefits that this technology can offer to students and lecturers at the University of Pretoria, which is one of the largest universities in South Africa. It also investigates the procedures and systems that will need to be put in place to incorporate tablet technology. Finally, it makes recommendations for the effective implementation of tablet technology at universities in general and the University of Pretoria in particular.
