Abstract:
The use of self access in ESL classroom teaching and learning is not a novel experience in Malaysia. Universiti Malaysia Pahang being a focused technical university embraces technology and encourages the application of ICT in its ESL classrooms. Hence, the Tell Me More Language Software is introduced to complement ESL classroom learning to improve learners’ language proficiency as the English subjects offered in UMP emphasizes more on technical communication. A set of open ended questionnaire was distributed to 50 first year first semester engineering undergraduates to acquire their perceptions on the use of TMM as part of their ESL learning experience in the classroom. Data obtained from the questionnaire generated the following results: (1) majority of the students accepted and are highly motivated to use TMM as it improves their language proficiency in terms of Received Pronunciation (RP), vocabulary range and communicative competence in general (2) they felt that more hours should be allocated for this self access activity. The results of this survey suggest that the self access activity has benefited and motivated the learners, thus leading ways to the application of other CALL methodologies which support ESL classroom teaching and learning.
