Abstract:
The paper deals with the position of reading literacy in the curriculum for elementary education in the Czech Republic. It should be mentioned that although students in the Czech system of education participate in international studies such as PISA and PIRLS, the curriculum only includes a brief mention about this phenomenon. Despite this fact, teachers in the Czech Republic try to apply relevant teaching methods to make CR more successful in the next international comparison. In June 2017, the project team carried out a research study in the first grades across the CR to identify which reading competences students have after one year of study in elementary school. The research method was a non-standardized achievement test, which focused on various components of reading literacy. The data were interpreted with respect to the research variables; the results were discussed in the context of education in elementary schools in the Czech Republic.
