Abstract:
In 1995, as a Grade 8 student struggling to read even simple English words like “pen,” I was given a life-changing opportunity—a three-month foundational support class led by a dedicated teacher. This short intervention not only transformed my reading ability but also paved the way for a successful academic journey, culminating in a Master’s in English Literature, a Law degree, and an MPhil in English Linguistics. Inspired by this personal journey, I have implemented a structured “Foundation Class” model in my own school network, where I currently serve as Director.

This model targets students from Grade 2 through high school who present with significant reading and writing deficits. Rather than retaining these students in their current grade levels, we offer a one-year foundational course focused on intensive literacy development. Upon completion, students are transitioned to their appropriate academic level without delay.

The outcomes have been significant: learners who once struggled with Basic English literacy are now thriving in advanced academic and professional pathways, including competitive programs such as MBBS. The Foundation Class not only builds literacy skills but also fosters student confidence, emotional well-being, and family engagement.

This paper outlines the design, outcomes, and potential scalability of the Foundation Class model, and concludes with a call to action for educational institutions worldwide to consider personalized remediation approaches that avoid the stigma and delay of grade retention.
