COLLEGE CLASSROOM INNOVATION WITH SOCIAL MEDIA
High college education faces new methodological challenges because students have now more particular characteristics. Nowadays they feel comfortable interacting and learning through diverse resources, specially technological and audiovisual ones, being part of the “digital natives” (Prensky, 2001).
The challenge of advancing towards a new teaching approach that attends the use of new technologies passes through a progressive methodological change, one that makes good use of rich resources, tools and services that professors and students count with, facilitating information accessibility that is presented, created and analyzed following different formats.
The aim of this work was for students to share their ideas, doubts and to interact giving their opinions through a social network that binds professors and students. More so, we look to reinforce student’s confidence and creativity.
Mterials and method:
We performed this work at Universitat de València (SPAIN) and a total of 16 students belonging to a practical subgroup in the Degree of Physical Therapy participated. Firstly, students had to download the Flipgrid© app and join a group created by the professor. Then, the professor opened a discussion topic related to the specific material given in that course. From then on, every student was required to interact and do their bit. To do so, they were instructed to film original and short videos discussing about the given proposal.
Finally, when the practical course concluded, the degree of student satisfaction was assessed. This assessment was performed analyzing two markers: The increment in active student participation and the student’s attitude towards the use of emerging technologies in the teaching-learning process
Students reflected as positive and resourceful using new active technologies in the teaching-learning process. Because of this and the satisfactory result, we continue to consider developing activities that promote active participation of the students in emerging technologies.
These results are given thanks to the use of audiovisual and technological new tools and materials that are applicable both in the face-to-face and virtual teaching. This enables the resolution of student’s doubts both by the professor or by a peer student.
