Abstract:

Sustainable development requires holistic approaches in education that foster sustainability values, competencies, and behaviours necessary to address contemporary environmental and societal challenges. Higher education institutions play a key role by integrating sustainability into curricula, research, and community engagement, thereby contributing to a sustainability-oriented society. The Eco-Schools programme is an international initiative that encourages schools and universities to adopt sustainable practices, enhance environmental awareness, and develop sustainability skills. Faculties participating in the programme, referred to as Eco-Faculties, implement activities such as waste reduction, energy conservation, sustainable mobility, and community awareness campaigns. This study examined students’ and staff members’ awareness of Eco-Schools activities, attitudes towards sustainability, and engagement in sustainable behaviours at Eco-Faculties in Slovenia. Data were collected via an online survey, comprising 139 students and 59 staff members from multiple Eco-Faculties. Results indicated that participants generally hold positive attitudes towards the Eco-Schools programme and sustainability initiatives at their faculties. However, awareness of specific programme activities was limited, and engagement in individual actions occurred infrequently. Differences were also observed between students and staff regarding the perceived importance of environmental awareness. While both groups expressed interest in their faculties’ sustainability orientation, actual participation in sustainable behaviours remained limited. These findings highlight the need to strengthen the Eco-Schools programme by promoting greater awareness and active engagement, thereby supporting the adoption of sustainable practices among students and staff.
