Abstract:
Digitally mediated classrooms increasingly bring together learners with diverse cultural, linguistic, and educational backgrounds. As higher education expands online and blended learning, instructors must design learning processes that meaningfully integrate diversity. Intercultural pedagogy has emerged as a relevant framework for fostering inclusive participation, dialogue, and collaborative knowledge construction. This paper examines its role in digitally mediated environments, focusing on an Educational Psychology course delivered in a Romanian higher education institution.
The study was conducted during the 2024–2025 academic year with 48 undergraduate students and 3 instructors involved in course design and facilitation. Cultural diversity was reflected in differences in educational experiences, communication styles, and socio-cultural perspectives. Intercultural pedagogy is conceptualized as a set of intentional teaching practices that position diversity as a pedagogical resource supporting perspective-taking and meaning negotiation.
A qualitative design was employed, complemented by descriptive quantitative indicators. Data included 126 discussion forum contributions, 18 recorded synchronous sessions, 48 reflective journals collected at three points during the semester, and semi-structured interviews with instructors. Participation rates and assignment completion were used as proxy indicators of engagement and learning outcomes.
Intercultural strategies were implemented through structured discussion prompts encouraging multiple perspectives, collaborative tasks comparing educational viewpoints, and guided reflective assignments. Clear communication guidelines were provided to support consistent participation.
Findings indicate that explicit integration of intercultural strategies improved interaction quality and engagement. Perspective-oriented discussions generated approximately 30% more responses than general topics, while reflective journals showed a shift from descriptive to analytical engagement. Students demonstrated increased ability to articulate assumptions and respond constructively to differing viewpoints. In contrast, less structured early activities showed lower engagement and occasional misunderstandings.
The study concludes that intercultural pedagogy should be intentionally embedded in digitally mediated course design. Structured dialogue, collaboration, and reflection can foster inclusive learning environments and support meaningful engagement with diversity. These findings highlight the importance of explicit task design and communication guidelines in enhancing participation and learning processes in higher education. Keywords:
