Abstract:
Traditionally teaching was designed to develop theoretical thinking i.e., knowledge about customs, traditions, and religion; whereas modern teaching concentrates more on developing practical skills that are more pragmatic and focused on the constantly changing and development of the world.
The main focus of this research paper is to investigate the transformation from the traditional educational approaches to the modern educational approaches of teaching. The research commences by highlighting the differences between the two learning approaches leading to the paradigm shift in the teaching and learning through the use of the innovative pedagogical approach of flipped classroom as a means of enhancing student engagement due to its instruction focus on the learner.
Reflexivity methodology is utilised in this research reporting on ones’ own teaching experience over a period of time to provide a deeper understanding of the challenges encountered while applying the flipped classroom. It further provides the researcher (myself) with learning tools to enhance on my classroom practices to provide the adequate environment for a successful flipped classroom and guarantee a genuine student-centred learning experience.
Finally, the research paper proposes a model of practice for educators to follow for a flipped classroom focused on enhancing student engagement leading to higher productivity and successful outcomes i.e., win-win situation for both students and educators. Keywords:
