Abstract:
Generative Design (GD) is a powerful tool that uses computer algorithms and artificial intelligence to quickly develop multiple design options based on input parameters and design constraints. This study aims to investigate the potential of generative design in interior design practice and education and identify the advantages, disadvantages, and barriers to implementing GD methods in design education and associated strategies.
Semi-structured interviews will be conducted with professional interior designers and faculty from interior design schools in the Middle East region. The interviews will focus on the perceived benefits and challenges of implementing generative design tools in industry and education, as well as potential barriers to implementation and strategies.
In addition, a survey questionnaire tool will be developed based on the findings of the interviews. The survey will be distributed to professionals and educators in architecture and interior design.
Preliminary findings suggest that generative design has the potential to improve the efficiency, creativity, and quality of interior design projects while also enabling designers to optimize their designs based on performance criteria. However, challenges are also associated with incorporating generative design in design education, such as the need for more standardization in software tools and the lack of collaboration between the industry and academia.
This ongoing study aims to contribute to understanding the potential of generative design in transforming interior design practice and education and provide insights into effectively implementing it in the design curriculum. By identifying barriers to implementing generative design in the interior design curriculum and exploring possible strategies for overcoming them, this study will provide valuable guidance for educators and practitioners.
