Abstract:
The emergence of coronavirus in late 2019 had a lot of implications on how teaching and learning should be conducted going forward. It could be recalled that virtually all the schools across the globe were shut down totally for some months thereby halting the activities in schools for such a period. During such a period, only the schools in developed countries had the opportunity to resort to online teaching and learning platforms while other schools in developing and underdeveloped countries stopped academic activities. It has been revealed in the literature that information and communication technology facilities promote effective learning in the education system. However, literature is scarce on teachers’ access to and utilization of information and communication technology tools in teaching and learning Economics in Nigerian secondary schools. Thus, this study explored the extent of access to and utilization of information and communication technology facilities in teaching and learning Economics in Secondary Schools in Nigeria. This study adopted a descriptive survey design. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select 126 Economics students for the study. The researchers designed a questionnaire titled “Access to and Utilization of ICT for teaching Questionnaire” The questionnaire was face validated by experts in instrument development. Thereafter, the instrument was trial tested and the internal consistency reliability indices of .78 and .84 were obtained for clusters A and B of the questionnaire using the Cronbach alpha method. Data collected were analyzed with a statistical package for social science (SPSS). The results of mean and standard deviation analysis were used to answer the research questions. The findings revealed that teachers’ access to information and communication technology facilities was grossly limited in most Nigerian Secondary Schools. Besides, The findings also revealed that many teachers to a very low extent utilized information and communication facilities in teaching and learning Economics. However, the problem of lack of access and poor electricity supply hinder the effective use of information and communication technology facilities in teaching and learning Economics. The researchers recommend the adequate provision of access to information and communication technology facilities.
