IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT ON VIOLENT BEHAVIOUR AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL ADOLESCENTS

Abstract:
Violence cuts across generations. It is manifested in form of rioting, sexual harassment, fighting and bullying. These destructive activities contribute to psychological trauma, physical disabilities, drop out and poor academic performance among students. The purpose of this study was to identify forms of modern technological devices influencing violent behavior among secondary school students. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The study population comprised students in public secondary school in Ife Central Local Government Areas of Osun State. A sample of 250 students was randomly selected for the study. A questionnaire titled, Technological and Violent Behaviour Questionnaire (TVBQ) was used to collect data for the study. Data collected was analyzed using frequency count, simple percentages and Linear Regression Analysis. The study revealed that there are different forms of technological advancement influencing violent behavior such as internet, mobile phone and media, students are familiar with them and they contributed to violent behavior among students. It was recommended that guidance and counselling be reinforced in schools in order to monitor cases of violent behaviour through technological advancement and to educate the students on the impact of incessant use of technological advancement on their education. Also, there is a need to introduce the teaching of peace education in schools in order to enable the students to appreciate the relevant of peace in their lives and environment.
