Abstract:
This study researched the influence of Covid-19 on the academic achievement of secondary school students in mathematics and English language in the post-pandemic era in Enugu state of Nigeria. The study adopted an ex-post facto research design. Three research questions and three hypotheses guided the study. The population of the study consisted of all secondary school students in Nigeria. The researchers drew a sample of 120 students through a simple random technique used for the study. Students’ academic achievement in mathematics and English language proforma was used for data collection in the study. The data set was face validated to ensure proper recording and legibility. The data were analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 28. The mean and standard deviation were used in reporting the research questions, while the t-test was used to test the hypotheses at a .05 significance level. The result indicated that the academic achievement of students in both mathematics and English language during Covid-19 is poor. Findings also revealed that students’ English language achievement was significantly higher than in mathematics. More so, no gender influence was found for mathematics and English language concerning students` academic achievement during Covid-19. Based on the findings, recommendations were made, among others, that intensive efforts be put in place by relevant education stakeholders to improve students’ academic achievement during and after Covid-19, especially in mathematics.
