Abstract:
Ever since its beginning, the library has undergone a number of transformations and acquired different roles and functions. Contemporary society has gradually imposed a change in the mission of the library institution. Its traditional functions have developed and have been complemented by new necessities related to its opening to issues of civic society and its role as a cultural, educational, social and an information institute. In order to respond to the dynamics of the contemporary information environment, new changes have taken place in the library services, and hence the need for an update in the library and information educational programs.

The current paper aims to present the need for development of new competencies of library specialists and in particular the introduction of the course Bibliotherapy as part of the training of students in the MA program Library and Information and Cultural Management with the Library Management Department of the Faculty of Library Studies and Cultural Heritage of the University of Library Studies and Information Technologies – Bulgaria.
