Abstract:
Hydraulic turbomachines are a fundamental subject in many engineering degree programs. The subject has traditionally had high success rates because of its straightforward conceptual framework and basic mathematical requirements. However, in recent years, teachers have observed a decline in student performance, particularly in complex problem-solving scenarios where students must integrate different knowledge fields and methodologies.

To address this problem, we have been developing proactive support strategies. Specifically, we are creating a set of virtual activities hosted on the Moodle learning platform at the University of Malaga to help and motivate students and reduce dropout rates. These activities aim to guide students through methodological and conceptual challenges commonly found in Hydraulic Turbomachines. By gradually exposing students to complex concepts, we hope to give them a better understanding of practical applications and exam problems.

Our study will investigate the effectiveness of our teaching approach through both qualitative and quantitative analysis. We will analyze its impact on student success rates and grades three years after implementation. Additionally, we propose strategies to provide students with additional support by integrating a review of fundamental mathematics to reduce significant learning barriers in the subject of Hydraulic Turbomachines.
