Abstract:
Cellphones and excessive screen time in classrooms represent a major global educational issue, with 88% of educators reporting increased student learning challenges and 80% noting worsened behavior. Constant distractions disrupts focus, lowers academic performance, hinders social-emotional development, and contributes to mental health issues, prompting many schools to implement device restrictions. Studies have indicated that the amount of screen time has had an adverse effect on brain development on Gen Z and Gen Alpha due to never knowing life without technology. It has been found that those generations that have had years without technology, or educated in school without technology or digital devices, have experienced brain development at a more rapid pace.

Globally, many countries have engaged in the digital media debate gaining traction and some real efforts are being made to tackle the associated problems. It represents a profound shift in awareness, and it is critical if we stand a chance of giving children back their experience of childhood with the creativity, free play, and social interactions that it entails. The "back-to-basics" initiative emphasizes that printed materials are essential for deep learning and concentration. Proponents of the reversal argue that digital tools are often distracting and that the physical act of writing by hand strengthens memory and information retention in ways that typing cannot. In early childhood education, the government of certain countries plan to end mandatory digital learning for children under the age of six, allowing them to focus on acquiring knowledge through teacher expertise and vetted printed sources rather than unmonitored online research. While other countries are not abandoning technology entirely, this move serves as a global example of the need to strike a healthy balance between modern innovation and proven traditional methods to ensure students develop the core skills necessary for their future.

This paper will present research of shifting Gen Z's and Gen Alpha’s education toward "unplugged" methods requiring a move from digital consumption to experiential learning where technology is a secondary tool rather than the primary environment. To address digital addiction, many educators are slowly attempting to shift toward a "low-dopamine" approach that prioritizes tactile engagement and human connection. It will also examine the science behind smartphone addiction and reveal the secrets tech companies do not want children to know about how apps are designed to be addictive. Discussion consistently takes place regarding decreasing the use of cellphones for these younger generations, but in essence we see educators utilizing even more technology in schools, having an adverse effect on students’ brain development. Children spend an average of 7.5 hours on digital devices every day with profoundly negative consequences. While some technology may “amplify” real-life experiences, the vast majority undermines it by limiting physical activity, creating anxiety, or damaging self-esteem. Would going back to basics in teaching our youth assist in reversing this problem, especially in a world where AI is being thrust into our lives and classrooms? How can we restructure teaching and learning to address this issue that research has proven to exist? How do we find the balance?
