Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to analyze the methodological potential of studying the means of linguistic implication of intercultural differences for the formation of linguo-socio-cultural competence of university students studying English. As an example, the variance of transport terminology in British and American English is considered. The authors proceed from the fact that representatives of each nation identify in objects and concepts those features that are most significant for them and reflect the characteristic vision of the world for each nation. Therefore, it can be argued that national differences in the perception of the surrounding world take place not only in the common language, but also in specialized languages. The relevance of analyzing and comparing rail and road terminology is due to the fact that in the UK and the United States of America, rail and road transport play an important role in many areas. The formation of English transport terms is inextricably linked with the development of transport, first in the UK, and then in the United States. It can be concluded that despite the importance of standardization, it must be remembered that terminology is largely a reflection of the professional worldview. During the research, the following methods were used: analysis of scientific and reference literature, analysis of dictionary entries, etymological analysis, comparative method. To select the language material, data from such publications as The Oxford English Dictionary, The Dictionary of Transport and Logistics, Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners, Oxford Dictionary of Current English, Cambridge Dictionary Online, Collins English Dictionary Online were used.

The scientific novelty of the work is due to two factors. From the point of view of linguistics, it should be noted that there is insufficient coverage of the problem of territorial variability of the English language on the basis of transport terminology. From the pedagogical point of view, it should be noted that insufficient attention is paid to the study of the peculiarities of the territorial variants of the English language. However, the authors are of the opinion that explaining to students the need to take this aspect into account in professional communication in a foreign language can increase the effectiveness of this communication.
