Abstract:
Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that overlays digital information such as images, sounds, videos, and other graphics in the user's real world. AR applications today rely on smartphones to display a digitally augmented world through the phone's camera. With the widespread adoption of mobile technologies and recent advances in hardware, educational applications using AR technology have become more accessible and widely used. However, the potential of AR in learning and education remains underutilized. Therefore, this paper covers the research on the potential use of AR and its impact on the learning process, focusing on the vocabulary learning process in learning a new language. The aim was to create a proof of concept by developing a mobile application, called Visio, with optical character recognition (OCR) function to scan words on any surface and an AR function to display the scanned words as a 3D model in a real environment. The Visio application offers the benefits of visual memory, which has been proven to have a longer retention rate and help better understanding. In this paper, we further explain and analyze the performed steps in the system development life cycle (SDLC) of this mobile application, followed by the evaluation of the system among initial users. The preliminary results of this study show positive feedback and interest from users, which will help in further development to bring Visio to the forefront of revolutionary EdTech products with a mission to break language barriers with one word.
