Abstract:
The present study investigated the influence of media (instructional video or text) on students' learning outcomes in terms of their learning performances. Recent studies reported the effectiveness of learning from online videos over content-equivalent texts. Ninety-two undergraduate students were randomly assigned to a text or video condition, in a pretest, learning condition 1 (summarizing), learning condition 2 (forming questions), counterbalancing, and posttest design. The topic assigned was immune system. Applying an experimental design, undergraduate students’ immediate learning performance was measured based on the scores of a multiple-choice test administered immediately after experimental sessions. The participants were expected to have a minimum level of prior knowledge regarding the topic given in the experiment. All the participants stated they had poor prior knowledge about the topic assigned for the experiment, The Immune System. Results from the study confirmed the greater efficacy of instructional videos than text which had a significantly more positive effect on immediate learning performance.
