Abstract:
In this paper we examine employment problems of young university graduates and their problems in professional advancement during first years after the beginning of the career.
We analyze these problems considering special features of job market in the industrial region: on the one hand, there are quite a lot of job offers at large industrial enterprises and in the service industry, on the other hand, there is strong competition among young university graduates, as well as between them and experienced workers of older age.
Our conclusions are based on the results of a sociological survey of young people (under the age of 30) who have graduated from the university in the last 5 years.
The survey has been conducted in one of the largest industrial regions of Russia - Sverdlovsk oblast. The survey delivered online on Google Forms service using the target quota sample (N=300).
We used two quota signs: the year of graduation (from the first to fifth) and the field of study. We divided all graduates according their fields of study into 4 groups: engineering and technical sciences, social and economic sciences, liberal arts and medical sciences.
According the results of the survey, more than a half of the graduates found a job during the study at the university, 33% of graduates were employed right after a graduation.
The rest of graduates (mostly those who graduated from university in the last year) are in search for work or have occasional employment.
Graduates from liberal arts group experienced the most serious problems with employment. Among such problems respondents noted low wages, lack of vacancies corresponding to the qualification obtained at the university, lack of work experience.
During our study we found that young graduates have a very slow professional advancement.
Most of the graduates are not satisfied with their wages and want to change jobs in a near future. We found that more than 20% of graduates working without a contract, another 25% of graduates employed on a position not corresponding to qualification obtained in the university. In future it can lead to difficulties in their career and become an obstacle to professional fulfillment. Keywords:
