Abstract:
The paper presents learning and training modules modelling of the eLMS-RS (eLearning Management System in Radiology-Senology) system. The senology represents the breast cancer domain. The eLMS-RS system is a learning management system under development in Gustave Roussy Hospital in Paris Area (France). We present in this paper the second phase of the development of this system which consists in the modelling step. Case-Based Reasoning (CBR), is the process of solving new problems based on the solutions of similar past problems. CBR starts with a set of cases or training examples, it forms generalizations of these examples, by identifying commonalities between a retrieved case and the target problem. The Case-Based Teaching is a learning strategy which may help learners/trainees to develop the ability of applying concepts and ideas to practical experience. Medical education is based on experience formalized as cases called clinical cases. These cases learned individually or in groups are examples resulting from real situations. The CBR approach is appropriate in the medical field and thus in medical imaging. The Case-Based Reasoning represents case knowledge as a set of cases. This set of cases (experience) may then be reused when solving new problems, for example when making new diagnoses. The radiologist-senologist (trainee/learner) can benefit from prior experience and cases. We adopt CBR as knowledge representation for the modelling design of the modules of the eLMS-RS system. The modelling design uses the object modelling with UML2 (Unified Modelling Language).
Learning and training modules in the eLMS-RS system are presented as cases. These cases will be very effective in classes. During the class session, learners/trainees and trainers participate as contributors and as listeners to advance in their learning and with their classmates. Both the learning and training modules can be presented to the learner/ trainee or the trainer in many forms and ways or explored by the learner/trainee or the trainer with different outcomes resulting from learner choices and decisions.
The paper is organized as follows: First, we define briefly the eLMS-RS system and its objectives. We present in details the learning and training modules formalized as cases. We illustrate these modules with multiple models. At the end of the paper, we provide a discussion of perspectives and future work and a conclusion of different concepts used to develop the learning and training modules in senology. Keywords:
