Abstract:
Artificial intelligence (AI), more specifically Generative AI is reshaping higher education, influencing curriculum design across general education and discipline-specific programs such as computer science, cybersecurity, and information technology. Institutions are increasingly integrating AI literacy into core curricula to ensure students develop competencies in algorithmic reasoning, data interpretation, and the ethical use of AI, while also establishing policies and training to support responsible adoption.
This paper investigates the application of generative AI as a supplementary instructional tool in two university-level courses: introductory Java programming and a mathematics course. It shows that when used as a guided support tool, generative AI can function as an effective tutor that reinforces key concepts and enhances student comprehension.
Through two undergraduate courses, the paper examines how generative AI tools are incorporated to provide real-time explanations, step-by-step problem-solving assistance, and personalized feedback It addresses how the generative AI tools support students understanding of foundational programming logic and mathematical reasoning, while also promoting independent learning. The paper also explores the pedagogical benefits of integrating AI with traditional instruction, including increased accessibility to academic support and improved engagement with complex material. Additionally it addresses the potential limitations, such as overreliance on AI-generated solutions and the risk of diminished problem-solving skills. The authors will demonstrate that when thoughtfully implemented into an assignment, generative AI can serve as a valuable complement to traditional teaching methods, enhancing learning outcomes while preserving the central role of instructor guidance and student critical thinking.Keywords:
