Abstract:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming both legal education and the legal profession, with significant implications for undergraduate major selection, career pathways and ultimately the legal profession and type of law to practice. This paper examines the opportunities and risks posed by AI. It will discuss how legal education should proactively evolve to prepare students for a profession increasingly shaped by technological innovation. It will explain the growing influence of AI-driven tools—including legal research platforms, document automation systems, and predictive analytics—on the skills, curricula, and core competencies required of future legal professionals.

While AI has the potential to enhance efficiency and expand access to legal information for both academic studies and professional work, it can also challenge foundational elements of legal training, particularly in the areas of critical thinking, legal writing, and ethical reasoning. The paper further explores the evolving role of lawyers within an AI-augmented environment, emphasizing the rising importance of technological literacy, adaptability, and interdisciplinary competence. It also addresses the necessity of preserving human judgment as a central component to fair legal decision-making, cautioning against the displacement of judicial and jury deliberation by automated systems.
