Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is taking over the top trending technology talks everywhere especially when Generative AI is discussed and its impact on the cloud. With its popularity in the area of generative AI, there are many benefits and also challenges and controversy surrounding AI especially in the area of education. AI continues to see more media as more and more uses for generative AI are made available to the public.
The area of generative AI and the use of ChatGPT and other equivalent models has taken off recently having both positive popularity as well as controversy and challenges with the field of education. Generative AI, with its incredible power, can produce code, text, imagery, music or art by the use of popular AI generators which have been mainstreamed by the use of ChatGPT, bard, gpt4, AI-Write, Jasper and Lex just to name a few of the most widely used ones. Within the first few months of the launch of ChatGPT, it was estimated, that nearly one hundred million users had subscribed and used ChatGPT since its public debut in November of 2022. Recent research has indicated that generative AI tools might have a positive spin on education and that generative AI tools could be an enhancement to student learning and can help educators in preparing their lessons and assignments Although there have been recent bans of generative AI in the education sector, others have argued to not ban or prohibit generative AI, but to embrace its technology and adapt to it as students and faculty will need to learn how to live with this technology as it becomes increasingly popular and used daily in the real world.
AI developments create challenges and controversy as it could lead to various issues or complications some of which have been realized and others yet to be discovered. Those in higher education will need to embrace the technological advancements happening daily in the area of AI, as it is imminent that AI will be with us for many years to come. AI must be used for good in an ethical and moral way. Ongoing research includes creating generative AI samples with human created samples and testing users to see if they can determine which are generated and which are created by experts in higher education. Additionally, surveying faculty, administrators, and students at institutions to see their perceptions, attitudes and beliefs of generative AI in the learning environment is in the works along with further moral and ethical best practices of using AI in the education as well as in the healthcare industry.
Generative AI can be part of an "All In, not Anxiety Inducing phenomenon". This paper reflects on the impact of generative AI and the many benefits, challenges and controversial areas of Generative AI in higher education. It discusses some of the current and future research developments and moral and ethical issues in Generative AI.Keywords:
