Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a trending topic in recent months. Top technology sectors are speaking about AI, popular movies are streaming about it and many are using AI for its convenience. With its popularity in the area of generative AI, there is also an area of controversy surrounding AI, more specifically on AI challenges around ethics and morality in the real world and education.
Recently AI has taken off in the media and has seen more media coverage than ever before[9]. The area of generative AI and the use of chatGPT and other equivalent models has taken off recently having both positive popularity as well as controversy surrounding the field of education. Generative AI, with its incredible power, can produce imagery, text, code, music or art by the use of popular AI generators which have been mainstreamed by the use of chatGPT, bard, gpt4, AI-Write, Jasper and Lex to name a few. Within the first two months of the launch of chatGPT, it was estimated, that nearly one hundred million users had subscribed and used chatGPT since it’s public debut in November of 2022. Recent research has indicated that generative AI tools might have a positive spin on education and that generative AI tools could be an enhancement to student learning and can help educators in preparing their lessons. Although there have been recent bans of generative AI in the education sector, others have argued to not ban or prohibit generative AI, but to embrace its technology and adapt to it.
If used incorrectly, AI developments could lead to many other issues or complications some of which have been realized and others yet to be discovered. As a society with many technological advancements happening daily in the area of AI, it is imminent that AI will be with us for many years to come. As a society, it is recommended to embrace AI and use it for good in an ethical and moral way. Future research includes creating generative AI samples with human created samples and testing users to see if they can determine which are generated and which are created by humans. Additionally, surveying faculty and students at institutions to see their attitudes and beliefs of generative AI in the learning environment is in the works along with further ethical and moral practices of using AI in the education as well as in the healthcare industry. Ongoing research continues on the area of ethics in AI and the use of generative AI in higher education.
It is recommended that humans act smarter than the AI and be proactive on being secure, responsible and morally obligated to using AI for good. AI and especially generative AI can be valuable to so many people and provide so many benefits. It is important that people are made aware of the many benefits and work with AI and embrace the new age of technology and artificial intelligence. There should not be a fear of AI as much of what is feared is the unknown. For now, it is recommended to embrace its advantages as long as its use is for good and used in a morally ethically responsible and safe way. This presentation reflects on the impact of AI and the controversial areas of AI. It discusses some of the current and future research developments and ethical issues in AI specifically to the education sector. Keywords:
