Abstract:
As in all universities we are constantly searching for areas to improve our student learning, assessments and inclusivity. At Swansea University we asked ourselves which is the best form of assessment to be both inclusive and improve student learning? The three forms of assessment reviewed were in person examinations compared to more traditional course works and presentations. The research will also focus on teaching delivery for each type of assessment from the lecturer’s point of view and the student view of learning gained from the assessments.

Specifically, the study will look at the impact on student learning and student performance over these three modes of assessment from the point of view of the students and lecturer.

The study will look to answer the following research questions:
- Which mode of assessment is preferred by the students?
- Which mode of assessment is considered the most inclusive by students?
- Does student knowledge retention change after each assessment?
- Does teaching delivery change for each mode of assessment?

Students will be asked to complete a questionnaire comprising of numerical scored questions and open questions allowing the students to provide more detailed observations. The questionnaire will cover the students learning experience before the assessment, their performance and retention of knowledge. The lecturers involved in the different types of assessments will be interviewed to gain their feedback on the outcome of the modes of examinations and any areas for improvement. A literature review was also performed to gain greater understanding of the theories supporting the types of assessments.
