Abstract:

University of Žilina in Slovakia dispose of Tunnel Traffic & Operation Simulator (Simulator). This unique device was created as a solution of research task focused on increasing safety in road tunnels within the framework of the project entitled Centre of Transport Research (CVD) that was funded by European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Our Department of Construction Management has in addition to a classical academic accredited education program also one education program with so-called “small” accreditation. This program “Managing of tunnel operation” has five parts designated for tunnel operators, tunnel specialists and tunnel managers. Beside the lectures which are mainly performed by online videoconference system, Simulator is main element of this education. All Slovak operators of road tunnels in operation have to get through the practice on Simulator every year and in that way obtain a certificate needed for their job. This paper describes the process of special vocational training and education of road tunnel operators.
