Abstract:
The problem of global migration is being addressed all over the world. Due to the war situation in Ukraine, the number of children entering schools as newcomers to their new home countries is increasing rapidly. Latvia has relatively little experience in this field. Statistical data show that the number of war refugees in Latvia has reached 30,000, while 4,000 Ukrainian children attended schools at the end of this academic year. Thus, the integration of newcomers into the education system of Latvia has become an urgent issue. The aim of the paper is to propose solutions for the integration of newcomers into the education system of Latvia, based on the experience of countries around the world in integrating newcomers into schools.
Research was conducted in two stages. Firstly, an analysis of the experience, normative documents and recommendations of the countries of the world was carried out; its aim was to clarify the advantages and disadvantages of using different models in schools. Secondly, a focus group discussion was organized with representatives of Latvian educational institutions who work with newcomers, with the aim of determining opportunities, needs and difficulties for the integration of these children into the Latvian education system. It was concluded that the experience of countries where the spoken language is not English can be used in Latvia, but with an emphasis on the preservation of each culture and identity. Keywords:
