Abstract:
In Taiwan, one of the most significant issues in education is bullying. The reason why students bully another is the character of cold cognition. In other words, bullies who have the character of cold cognition could not only fail to identify with what consequence of their violent behaviors would result in another’s emotional and physical condition, but they could not empathize with another’s feeling. Several studies found that fostering empathy can be an effective strategy to prevent bullying. Therefore, the aim of this study is to construct anti-bully curriculum by fostering the development of empathy in elementary school students.
The study involved literature-analysis applied for the construction of anti-bullying curriculum. This study, adopting role play, group discussion and other methods with grade 4 students, is constructed according to the framework of anti-bullying curriculum. The Japanese cartoon of “Doraemon” is then adopted and five teaching activities are constructed. To conclude, this study may be of importance in explaining the relationship between bullying and empathy, as well as providing teachers with a better understanding of how to prevent bulling behaviors of students by fostering their empathy.
