Abstract:
The technical sciences are based on the design and implementation of experiments, observations, measurements, results and their further interpretations. These elements require strong theoretical foundations, technical skills, commitment and creativity. Nowadays studying is not just about studying the theory, but also about effective searching for information.

Innovative teaching methods, such as academic tutoring, focuses on student’s development through student and professor collaboration.
Academic tutoring is well known in Poland, but that concept is still undiscovered at technical universities. Theoretical part of this paper concern the assumptions and objectives of academic tutoring as an alternative teaching method. The practical part is a description of the pilot implementation of tutoring at the technical university among future engineers.

During academic tutoring teachers and students confront new education challenges. This method requires a different approach to education, especially at technical universities, responding to student’s needs, experiences and plans. This is in a sense a return to the master-student relationship in which the older and more experienced person takes up the role of supporting and leading the younger and less experienced one. Tutoring is undoubtedly an elite teaching method comparing to the mass higher education currently being promoted in Poland.
