Abstract:
Dynamic development of information and communication technologies nowadays lead to arising the new solutions in monitoring and sensing applications. The most significant solution in that area are Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). These networks consist of a large number of small devices, each with different kinds of sensors. Sensor network nodes are arranged near or inside the potentially dangerous environment, which may cause the damage of the node. However, due to the small size and low cost nodes, these networks have a very broad application. The use of the WSN is dependent on the type of application used. Typical applications for this type of network can be: environmental monitoring, detection and tracking of people and vehicles, to detect various types of threats, machine monitoring or even health monitoring.

The ability of the design and implement Wireless Sensor Networks is very important for today’s engineers. The subject of the present paper are issues related to the way of teaching Wireless Sensor Networks with the use of Arduino open source development board. The review of the learning path, which starts from the design and finishes on the implementation, was made. The advantages of the use of the open source hardware platform as also as open source software were determined. The way of design of Wireless Sensor Network using XBee protocol were explained.
