Abstract:
The basic function of the media is the transmission of information. The information not only satisfies the basic human cognitive needs, broadens the horizon of its knowledge, allows orientation in the social space, but also constitutes the foundation of the integral development of the young person. The goal of every education is to provide integrated information resources that create knowledge in various areas of human and community development. The Internet is the main and most popular source of information. This source is growing every day with millions baits of information. Using these resources requires more and more knowledge and skills. This knowledge and skills are called information competences. These competences include, among others, the ability to understand the value of information, to search for useful information in databases, social media resources, etc. Part of this competence is also the ability to create and share valuable information for public use.

The aim of the article is, on the one hand, to examine the quality of information competences of students starting studies (surveys), and, on the other hand, to show online tools that allow access to valuable information resources needed in university education.
