Abstract:
The advent of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is profoundly influencing various domains, including higher education. This rapidly evolving technology presents unique challenges and opportunities, particularly in the context of academic assessments and examinations. As GenAI integrates more deeply into professional environments, it is imperative for students to develop proficiency in its use. However, the unregulated use of GenAI in educational settings, especially in assessments, poses significant ethical and academic integrity concerns.
In response to these challenges, a team of academics and lecturers at the South East Technological University (SETU) undertook the task of drafting, developing, and publishing a set of guidelines on the use of GenAI within the university. These guidelines are specifically tailored for learners, providing clear directives on what constitutes acceptable and unacceptable use of GenAI in academic work.
Recognising the necessity for learners to engage with GenAI responsibly, the guidelines aim to strike a balance between encouraging use of technology and upholding academic standards. To enhance their impact, we aimed to elevate the guidelines from merely words on a page to an interactive and engaging format. Therefore, the next phase of the project involved creating a dynamic online learning course.
As a learning designer, my role was to "bring the guidelines alive". This presentation will outline the learning design process used to transform the written guidelines into an engaging online course. The process began with an in-depth analysis of the document, followed by a creative phase that included storyboarding and re-imagining the content. The objective was to develop a responsive and interactive learning experience that is readily available and engaging for students.
The development phase involved using learning design technology to create an on-demand learning module that focuses on enhancing the learner's experience. This included making the course interactive, responsive, and easily navigable. The final product is a dynamic online course that brings the guidelines to life, making them more user-friendly and practical for students. The presentation will end with a live demo of the online course, highlighting its features and capabilities.
The goal is to illustrate how these interactive guidelines can significantly enhance the learning experience, making them more user-friendly and readily available to students, thereby fostering a better understanding and responsible use of GenAI in their academic pursuits. By transforming the guidelines into an interactive format, we aim to not only provide clarity on GenAI usage but also to enrich the educational experience, preparing students effectively for their future careers in an AI-driven world. Keywords:
