Abstract:

This single case study focused on exemplary administrator roles, actions, and practices during COVID-19. The study examined real life experiences bounded by a specific period of time. Data were collected in real time – while the participants were experiencing the challenges and successes of using technology for authentic learning experiences during COVID-19. Successful principals are able to flourish in normal circumstances, but the pandemic created uncommon situations which posed significant difficulties for administrators, teachers, and students. By focusing this study on administrators designated as exemplary, this research brought to light the roles, actions, and practices undertaken by administrators allow schools to thrive in chaos. Using interviews of teachers and their administrator, the authors discovered that administrators expanded their roles to find ways to provide ongoing support, took action to use the talent within the school, and led the way while modeling best practices. While COVID occurred over five years ago, the responses from exemplary administrators during this time can be instructional beyond this particular event.
