Abstract:
After the incursion of phenomena such as artificial intelligence, new hybrid models of education and the constant transformation of society, the topic of values acquires great relevance in higher education, to the extent that its presence as an instrument to overcome various situations becomes a great resource that is little used at the training level. This document offers the first observations of this study, which is expected to be the basis for future approaches to the instrumental management of values in education at the university level.

Together with the Swedish organization Point of Value and the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Querétaro Campus, we have started a pilot project to understand the vision that students have about their own values, the deep knowledge of them and the presence of these in their academic work that prepares them for their professional life.

This project is structured into three fundamental stages. The first stage involves the observation of student behavior in response to a value ranking (2022). The second stage corresponds to the observation of trends across disciplinary areas (2023). Finally, we aim to compare the entrance and graduation rankings to identify any specific trends in the evaluation of values promoted by educational institutions. These results are expected to be obtained by the year 2028.

The results shared in this study pertain to the second stage. We have a corpus of 144 students from three different universities across three countries: Colombia, Mexico, and Spain. These students represent various specialized fields, including both engineering and social sciences. The primary objective of this second stage is to understand value profile trends based on disciplinary areas. We analyze the results using the relationship-orientation graph provided by the value mapping instrument.

It is essential to note that the data were collected using the value ranking developed by the Swedish organization Point of Value. The test has been administered to over 55,000 individuals worldwide, primarily in professional environments across different global organizations. The structure of the Meaning Map is informed by developmental theories across four main areas: language, psychological, spiritual, and adult and leadership development. The theories from prominent scholars like Erik H. Erikson, Jean Piaget, Robert Kegan, and others underpin our research.

The ranking works with 3 Cycles of Development: Foundation, Focus and Vision. The Meaning Map offers perspectives based on personal values, with each column representing a worldview through various value words. Each value word, as a linguistic prototype, reflects an aspect of the worldview. With this information, the student can receive a Relationship Orientation (Interpersonal) that has this information: Foundation, Utility, Quality, Service, Collaboration, Integration, and Navigation.

The new hybrid models of education and societal involve our individual ability to adapt to the world. It's vital to understand the difference between personal and normative values and their impact on our responses to various situations, ensuring our actions are appropriate. Recognizing these distinctions not only fosters a robust sense of self-worth but also enhances our ability to cope with any situation authentically, eliminating misunderstandings both within ourselves and in our interactions with others.
