Abstract:
The development of the communicative competencies is presented today as an important demand in both professional and academic scenarios. The following paper is the result of the research developed at the Intstituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, campus Querétaro, with university students form different areas as well as active professionals to observe what kind of competencies are required in different work areas, and what content adjustments should be considered to bring the academic fields closer to the professional performance.

The study has been carried out with 218 students from different academic programs, and 147 people who work in diverse areas. Taking as reference a series of communicative actions linked to oral, written, organizational, informational, media and human competences, the research guide question has been: What are the communicative competencies that must be developed at university to achieve a better job performance? This classification has allowed to observe large differences between the competences demanded at the work area and the ones developed in the classrooms.

The close relationship between thinking and communicating requires a careful study and new knowledge and ways of doing – being – thinking, in such a way that it changes from instrumental models to mental structure development models, essential for information management as well as for new forms of communicative interaction.

The results clearly show the trends in the new generations and recommend specific fields of development that should be addressed in the academic programs of University Education. While the continuous use of digital media has developed some competencies at the instrumental level; the need to develop other competencies at the cognitive –communicative level becomes clear.

The subject of study that guides this research focuses on the communicative transversal competencies for university students of all careers and in particular, special communicative competencies for undergraduate communication students at Tecnológico de Monterrey, having as a frame of reference the new 2019 study programs which have two main aims:
- To know the transversal communication competencies, both analogous and digital, that must be developed in University undergraduates during their studies, in order to provide them with the necessary tools that allow them to perform well in their working areas.
- To delineate in a specific way, the communicative competencies of the Communication and Digital Media students, which must be developed in the new generation of graduates; marking strongly the specificity of the academic program.

These two objectives seek to deepen the skills and abilities that, from the field of communication, are required to develop in future graduates; and consider the technological and organizational transformation they will have to face after graduating.
