Abstract:
Triple bottom line and sustainability are recent terms that have been discussed very little in the area of education. During the last decade the term triple bottom line has been used as a paradigm to appraise the success of an organisation. It is defined as the balance of sustainability on three different aspects; the environmental, social and financial. The triple bottom line has been developed as an alternative to the misconception of company progression and success which often has been based on the economy. In recent times, it has been found that this is not the only significant variable that influences a company profitably as a long term resolution. Furthermore, company achievements should be related to the accomplishments of fulfilling the needs of company stakeholders and this group should be collaterally responsible for the results. According to the idea of triple bottom line, enterprises around the globe (due to globalization), have started to be concerned about the measurement of their company’s progress defined as sustainable development and have related it to their implications on quality of life. To gain a sustainable result, companies should preserve and build upon business performance whilst at the same time show consideration for the planet. This will ensure that societies are capable of preserving high levels of wellbeing for present and future generations of humanity. Companies also need to provide strategies to solve future challenges whilst maintaining on-going high levels of company performance. This paper maintains and describes the applicability of organizational triple bottom line approach to increase the organizational sustainability in the Spanish school settings considering the school directors within the primary role in the process. With this in mind, schools create crucial repercussions for societies, hence having the chance to promote positive behaviour and values in the community. The sustainability in a school setting is maintained by students, staff and community planning based on the current along with future needs. To guarantee the sustainability, efficient leadership appears necessary. Nevertheless, in Spain the situation of the school principal a new orientation is required. This paper is divided into sections pertaining to definitions of the sustainable leader, and to how a plausible sustainability in the spanish circunstances can be achieved through the organization, management, and implementation of available resources in a school setting.
