Abstract:
This paper reports the preliminary outcomes of the project “Contemporary Approach to the Development of Spatial Comprehension through Augmented Reality Content” (SPACAR) financed under the Key Action 2 framework of the Erasmus+ programme. Concretely it is being funded as a Strategic Partnerships for vocational education and training (KA202 action). The project is aimed to develop a didactic toolkit to promote the development of spatial skills in students both at vocational schools and technical colleges. Spatial skills are an important factor for the success of students in many areas related to the Science, Technology, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) fields. Modern mobile phones are a powerful platform to interact with 3D models and experiment with augmented reality. The main outcomes of the project are a mobile app running on both Android and iOs devices, a web platform for the management of the exercises and a methodology document to explain the use of the platform. The students can use the mobile app to access a course that is a collection of exercises. Each exercise contains a text description and a set of support files. These files can be 3D models, images or any type of file that can be visualized on a mobile phone. 3D models can be visualized both using augmented reality and an internal 3D model visualizer. The augmented reality functionality needs a QR code that works as a fiducial marker.

Intellectual outputs (IO) of the SPACAR project provide a collection of exercises that are organized on 5 groups:
- IO1: Cutting Geometrical Solids with Planes.
- IO2: Intersections of Geometrical Surfaces.
- IO3: Orthographic projections.
- IO4: Construction of Elements of Machine Parts.
- IO5: Architectural and Construction Drawing.

The SPACAR web platform provides teachers with the proper administrative rights, the possibility of creating their own courses. A course is a collection of exercises. These exercises can be copied from the IOs developed by the SPACAR partners. Currently, all the outcomes of the project are freely available in English. During the next months, they will be translated into the national languages of the partners.
