Abstract:
The aim of this scope and sequence is, firstly, to make 9th graders Brazilian students at an International School engage with the Machado de Assis’ perspective on the abolishment of slavery in Brazil by researching a range of newspapers articles collected from a Brazilian Digital Newspaper Library (Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira). Secondly, the activity will foster the understanding of the dialogue among texts in their variety of perspectives, their cultural contexts and the local and global issues. Also, the activity will promote the appreciation of how these texts contribute to diverse responses and to open up multiple meanings. Beyond that, it will be expected that the students recognize the Newspaper Digital Library as an important source for primary and secondary documents and its importance for preserving the social remembering and the portrait a certain period of time.
During the activity, the students will be guided in order to develop the following skills:
- Knowledge: Who is Machado de Assis? Why is he so important for the Brazilian literature? How did the slavery in Brazil ended? What is a newspaper digital library and how it provides a wider perspective about slavery?
- Understanding: Researching, collecting, selecting and evaluating the articles of Machado de Assis regarding the abolishment of slavery in Brazil;
- Communicating: In a Socratic Seminar, students will be stimulated to interpret the following question: How did different texts give a complementary view of the slavery in Brazil? Then, through an essay, students will be asked to write about the importance of teaching Machado de Assis at schools.
In conclusion, this activity will provide to the students an opportunity to understand the importance of Machado de Assis that goes beyond the aesthetic question. Besides, this activity shows to the students the importance of the newspaper and the memory as liaison to understand the current facts.Keywords:
