Abstract:
A survey was made of the skills shopping centre managers should have in order to function optimally. Respondents had to rate 40 different skills on a 5-point scale and also indicate the three skills they regard as being the most important.

The survey was completed by 500+ delegates attending the SA Council of Shopping Centres / University of Pretoria Certificate in Shopping Centre Management course. Results for the period 2000-2014 are compared with those of an initial study carried out in 1999 and trends over the 15-year study period are analysed.

The results should be useful for defining and/or revising the curricula for the training of shopping centre managers in Southern Africa and also have implications for similar training programmes world-wide, such as those offered by the International Council of Shopping Centres and the British Council of Shopping Centres, and also for the training of shopping centre managers in Africa
