Abstract:
The first studies of the Kazakh phrase intonation were conducted by V.I. Zinovyeva [1], who considered the melodies of the Kazakh phrase. Thanks to the works of Z. Bazarbayeva [2], A.N. Nurmukhanova [3], and N.U Turkbenbayev [4] intonation in oral speech is now viewed as a complex interaction of the phonetic, lexical, morphological and syntactic means of the language.
However, the available data on the intonation of the Kazakh phrase in elementary school pupils do not sufficiently reveal all these aspects. There are only separate works on the intonation of the narrative, interrogative and exclamatory sentences. Hence the relevance of the problem of studying intonation in the oral speech of hearing impaired children.
The aim of our research is to determine the level of intonation system of the Kazakh language in hearing impaired fourth-grade learners. The study will use the tasks developed by A. Chulembayeva and A.N. Autayeva based on the publication of F.F. Rau and N.F. Slezina [4]. The materials consists of specially selected pictures and vocabulary material, which are expressive phrases. To study the level of intonation pupils are offered speech material representing the four main types of intonational constructions that are often used in oral speech. These include:
1) Narrative sentences,
2) Interrogative sentence with question word,
3) Interrogative sentence without interrogative word, and
4) Evaluation proposal with a value of a high degree of a sign, action, and state.
The study involved 16 hearing impaired pupils of the 4th grade of Special Boarding School for Children with Hearing Impairment.
Analysis of the results revealed that fourth-grade learners with hearing impairment did not equally possess the basic intonation structures. This is explained by the fact that the declarative sentences are correctly reproduced by 75% of the pupils, the interrogative sentence with the interrogative word – by 74% of the pupils, the interrogative sentence without the interrogative word – by 14% of the pupils. Evaluation sentences with a value of a high degree of a sign, action, and state are correctly reproduced by 16% of the children.
Thus, in order for oral speech of fourth-grade learners to be closer to its natural sound, it is necessary to reconsider the methods used in schools for developing of intonational structures in pupils with hearing impairments.
