Abstract:
Studies in education have relied on think aloud approaches or diaries as introspective methods for examining problem solving. Our paper looks at the extent to which the Objective Knowledge Growth Framework (OKGF) can be used as a trustworthy self-report data collection method for research on problem solving processes. The framework was used by 21 groups of pre-service teachers as they dealt with practical assessment issues. A follow up validation interview was also conducted with five individuals who took part in the group activities. This introspective tool shows some capacity to reflect the level of reasoning, relevance, fluidity and coherence in reporting problem solving strategies. However, it may be more suitable for studying individual as opposed to collective problem solving strategies.
