Abstract:
Quantum physics not only reshapes our scientific understanding, it also challenges our intuitive notion of reality, opening space for radically new ideas, innovative technologies, and unconventional perspectives. As quantum technologies move from research laboratories to industrial applications and increasingly enter public discourse through policy programs and media narratives, it becomes urgent to develop a multifaceted quantum literacy. However, quantum physics is often framed as inherently “bizarre” and explained through oversimplified or misleading analogies, particularly in contexts where mathematical formalism cannot be used.
QPlayLearn is an online educational platform addressing this challenge by providing accessible, playful, yet scientifically rigorous resources on quantum science and technology. Created by researchers in quantum physics, the platform adopts a multilevel approach which allows learners to access concepts via different paths: building intuition and engagement through games and videos; developing conceptual understanding through description of experiments and visual explanations, deepening knowledge through formal tools. This layered design supports different target groups, from students and educators to professionals in industry, and can be used both for self-paced learning and within formal education.
This contribution focuses on the application of this framework to the ideation and production of Quantum Pills: short, animated videos aimed at communicating key ideas in quantum science, from foundational to emerging research topics, in a coincise and accessible way. Developed in collaboration with VIS - Virtual Immersion in Science for dissemination on the web and institutional platforms, the series currently includes several published videos.
Drawing on the pedagogical design and initial user feedback of the Quantum Pills, we examine how visual storytelling can be used for quantum physics, a field where we cannot rely on direct experience or every day intuition, balancing simplification with accuracy and avoiding misconceptions.Keywords:
