Abstract:
A foreign language lesson is a structurally, conceptually and strategically complex phenomenon involving the formation and development of several key competences in students: communicative, socio-cultural, socio-informational, cognitive, etc. These competencies underlie the formation of the students’ personal qualities by means of a foreign language.
One of the key competencies formed at a foreign language lesson is intercultural competence. A successful mutual understanding is impossible in the modern multicultural space without a well-formed intercultural competence, which implies a set of knowledge, skills and experiences that allow representatives of different cultures to communicate effectively. Such communication requires developed analytical and strategic abilities manifested in respect for the interlocutor, absence of prejudice, tolerance, acceptance of the intercultural communication context, etc. The base for the formation and development of such abilities is the knowledge of historical facts from the life of the countries of the studied languages, and the ability to identify and interpret their linguocultural content.
One of the cross-cultural topics studied at a foreign language lesson in higher education institutions is a key period in the history of mankind, the period of the Second World War/Great Patriotic War. An informative source of authentic materials to work on this topic at a foreign language lesson (Russian, French, Italian) can be digital archives of periodicals of Russia (USSR), France and Italy containing news of 1939-1945.
